The Larapinta Trail is a 223km (139 miles) hiking trail in Central Australia, running from Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the summit of Mount Sonder. Walking the full length of the Larapinta Trail is referred to as hiking the Larapinta End to End or the Larapinta 223 and typically takes between 14 and 21 days, depending on your itinerary.
Hikers can walk the Larapinta end to end as an independent walker, or as part of an organised tour group. If walking independently hikers can choose to walk either east to west (the traditional direction) or west to east. Tour groups that hike the Larapinta Trail end to end usually offer only east to west walks.
Walking the Larapinta Trail end to end independently does require a reasonable degree of planning compared to other multi-day bushwalks, in part due to its remoteness. As a result, only experienced bushwalkers who have previously completed multi-day backpacking trips should consider independently hiking the Larapinta Trail end to end.
If you've decided to hike the Larapinta Trail end to end, congratulations - it's a fantastic experience and we're sure you'll love it! Some of the logistical pieces to consider as part of your planning include:
Your itinerary - how long you intend to take and which direction you intend to hike
Food drops - how much food will you carry with you and where do you need food drops to occur
Water - where will you get water from and how much will you need to carry each day
Transfers - you'll need a transfer (or a kind friend) to get you to or from Redbank Gorge
Gear - Gear failure is one of the main reasons hikers don't complete the Larapinta end to end. Pack wisely!
Emergency communication - mobile phone reception is limited on the Larapinta Trail so you'll need to carry either a satellite phone or a PLB in case of emergency. See Larapinta Trail mobile phone reception for more info.
Maps - the Northern Territory Government produce an official info pack. See Larapinta Trail maps.
